reVive | Reclaimed Energy Storage | BA Final Year Major Project
Sustainable, Modular & Accessible Home Energy Storage using “second-life” Tesla EV Batteries.
Issue Statement
The rapid development of sustainable power generation technologies has backed fossil-fuels into a corner; fossil-fuel’s last advantage over sustainable technologies is its ability to be turned on and off instantly, not relying on uncontrollable factors like the weather.
Opportunity
We need to be able to store energy from renewable sources, to be immediately available when the grid needs it. The time is right for revolutionising the power grid by decentralising and democratising power generation and storage, using small-scale systems such as solar panels and small-scale battery storage systems. Although batteries are ethically and environmentally challenged, retired electric vehicle batteries are ideal for this application.
Proposal
reVive is a fully modular small-scale energy storage system which utilises retired Tesla battery modules. Its ability to be installed inside or outdoors, as well as the user’s ability to customise the system’s storage capacity to their needs results in a system that is more accessible than existing solutions. The system is designed to complement a circular business model, with the system automatically requesting maintenance when battery modules need replacing. The user’s interaction with the system is facilitated through the mobile app, which gives the user meaningful information about the system's performance.
